Badminton South Africa Honours for Service Award given to Diedius Basson

 

The Honours for Service Award of Badminton South Africa (BSA) may be conferred on any person who has served Badminton at a provincial level, in an official administrative capacity, for at least ten years.

Diedius Basson was given this award for his more than 33 years badminton service! Well done and thank you! Read more about all his accomplishments.

 

Diedius was the chairman of SWD (now Eden) from 1977 to 1987 (10 years).

After being transferred to Vredendal he became the chairman of the Boland sub-union North-West Boland and representative of Boland Country districts (Northwest Boland, Overberg, West Coast and Swartland) on the Boland executive. He served in this capacity from 1989 till 2000 (11 years).

In 2000 he enrolled at UNISA and resigned from active Badminton administration.

In 2011 he relocated to Cape Town and was selected to the Boland/Cape Winelands executive in 2013. Last year he was the match secretary, and the Cape Winelands representative on the Western Cape Province Sport Confederation, and on the Cape Winelands Sport Council (12 years).

Thus, 33 years in total!

Special achievements:
1. In 1988 he hosted the first ‘’Holiday Inn” tournament in Oudtshoorn in which Boland, EP, WP and Southern Cape participated. The following year visiting teams from New Zeeland and the USA participated in a Boland, EP WP tournament in Oudtshoorn.
2. From Vredendal, tournaments were organised in which players from Namaqualand, Swartland, Overberg and Cape Winelands participated.
3. Since Covid-19, the normal inter-club matches came to a stand still, he assisted in organizing a franchise league outside the club structures.
4. During 2022/23 he assisted the match organiser running four SA Championships and Inter-province tournaments in Robertson.
5. With the assistance of chairman of Cape Winelands, Mr Kalie Van Heerden, he compiles the Cape Winelands Badminton annual Trilateral reports and funding application for the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport.
6. Between 2013 and 2018 he represented Cape Winelands at the SA Silver Eagles, SA Golden Eagles and SA Diamond Eagles Championships and inter-provincial tournaments.
